Advising

Who is my mentor?

Every student is assigned to a faculty mentor during their Sophomore year.

If you are a new incoming first year student, you will be advised by the NAU Gateway Student Success Center when registering for classes.

If you are a current student and are not sure who your advisor/mentor is, contact the School of Forestry Student Services Coordinator at (928) 523-8956.

Regardless of whether you are a new or continuing student, you are required to contact our Student Services Coordinator prior to registering for classes each semester.

Should I make an appointment to see my mentor/advisor?

YES! For a listing of the mentor's offices, phone numbers and e-mail addresses, please visit the directory.

What are the best ways to contact my mentor?

Check to see if office hours are posted on their door.Office hours are the best time to knock on their door and/or make an appointment. Otherwise, call or email your mentor and leave a message asking the best way to reach him/her.

What are the benefits to having a faculty member as my mentor?

Faculty members are familiar with the required major courses, know the university's liberal studies program, have professional contacts, specialize in a research area, and are able to serve as a mentor and resource to students. We believe that pairing a student with a faculty mentor fosters the type of faculty/student interaction that we are proud of at the School of Forestry.

Can I change my mentor?

Yes, if you feel another mentor would be a better match AND this new mentor agrees to take you on as one of their students. To change your advisor, please contact the School of Forestry Student Services Coordinator.

Registration

How do I get activated?

Here at the School of Forestry we require that every student see Jennifer Tsonis before registering for classes. Once you agree on a class schedule, Jennifer will activate you for registration. Only Jennifer can authorize the activation of your registration.

Do I have to be activated to register for summer school?

No, only for Fall and Spring semesters.

Who can register me?

You can! Go to www.nau.edu/LOUIE to add/drop the web. If you need to register in person, go to Jennifer Tsonis, room 103a for assistance.

Where can I get registration, override and petition forms?

It's easy, just go online to the Registrar's Office virtual forms website.

What registration deadlines do I need to know about?

The deadlines to add/drop classes are set prior to each semester. They can not be extended if you miss one, so pay close attention!; Go to the Registrar's Office home page and click on General Information and the semester calendar.

Grades

How do I find out about my mid-semester grades?

If you are taking a 100 or 200 level class, you will get an email halfway through each semester prompting you to check LOUIE for your mid-semester grade. This is a great time to ask your professor for help if you need it, form a study group, or go for help at the Learning Assistance Centers.

What if I fail a class?

You can repeat a course that you get a grade of "D" or "F" up to three times. Be sure to fill out a Grade Replacement Form. The class you did poorly in will always remain on your transcript, but your GPA will include the better of the two grades. However you may not take a class at another institution and use it to replace a grade for a course here at NAU.

Liberal Studies

Which classes count for liberal studies?

Go to the liberal studies home page for a list of approved liberal studies courses. Remember, new courses keep getting approved, so check frequently.

Can I double count classes in my major and liberal studies?

No if you are a Forestry major, you cannot count a Forestry class towards both your liberal studies requirements and your major requirements. But, you can count preprofessional courses required in the major as liberal studies such as SC 111, ECO 284, STA 270 and Biology courses.

Can I double count classes in my major and diversity requirements?

Yes, you can count any class (including a Forestry class) in both the Forestry major and in the Global or Ethnic Diversity categories as long as it's an approved course under the diversity requirements.

What if I take a liberal studies class pass/fail, does it still count for liberal studies?

No, only graded classes that you pass can count for your liberal studies.
