PrintGraduate Admission Requirements - NAU Forestry
Students who do not have a previous degree in Forestry are eligible for admission to the NAU School of Forestry graduate program. However, upon admission, students who are admitted the without a previous degree in Forestry must take 15 hours of remedial coursework in forestry.

The requirements for admission to the NAU School of Forestry graduate program are:

  • GPA of 3.0 or greater on a 4.0 scale in all college and university work.
  • GRE scores in the top 40th percentile (approximately 500 Verbal, 600 Quantitative, 4.5 Analytical Writing).
  • If English is not your native language, a score of at least 80 on the internet based TOEFL, or 550 on the paper-based TOEFL or 213 on the computer based TOEFL.
  • For Ph.D., a demonstrated competence in scientific research.
  • For the M.S. and Ph.D. degree, you cannot be admitted until a faculty member agrees to serve as your major professor. Please read about faculty research interests on our Forestry Faculty Page to identify faculty whose interests match yours. Then e-mail, write, or phone individual faculty members about opportunities to work with them. Individual faculty members obtain the funds for Research Assistantships. Each faculty also select the students for the Research Assistantships for which that faculty have obtained funds. The only way to learn about research opportunities is to contact individual faculty members.
  • For the M.F. program, we will attempt to recruit advisors for each qualified applicant. However, we encourage you to contact individual faculty and to list (on your application form) up to three faculty members you would prefer to have as your advisor.
  • Please refer to the "Graduate Handbook" link for more in-depth information regarding admission requirements, degree offerings, and all other information relevant to our graduate program.
