PrintDemonstration Planting
We have installed a demonstration planting of new elm species along the westside of the 2100 block of North Navajo Blvd. Based on three years of experimental trials, we believe three new species of elms are suitable for Holbrook and are included in our demonstration. The trees we planted were small because of limited commercial availibility. If these species do well, larger sized material should be available in the future.

The species we have included:

  • Lace-bark elm, Ulmus parvifolia 'Glory'
  • Wilson elm, Ulmus wilsoniana
  • Japanese elm, Ulmus japonica

These three species are not widely planted in this part of the state, but all are available through national vendors (Arbor Village, Holt, MO, phone: (816) 264-3911). Trees were planted, staked (if required), ground cloth added around the base, and wood chips used as mulch. A drip irrigation system will be installed.

The project team and Paul Bosu (Northern Arizona University, PhD Graduate) provides the technical expertise. The City of Holbrook provided the personnel and machinery to prepare the planting holes and provided water hook-up for the irrigation system. The tree planting was done by community volunteers and volunteers from the NAU School of Forestry. Long term maintenance will be provided by the city of Holbrook.
