Field courses offer a unique opportunity for students to experience first hand forestry in different countries. Northern Arizona University School of Forestry has offered courses to Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, Ghana and Honduras.

These courses address the wide range of current tropical forestry issues and practices, including:

  • Characteristics and ecology of wet-tropical rainforest and dry-tropical forest ecosystems
  • Current trends in deforestation and, alternatively, forest protection and conservation management
  • Wildlife habitat management, ecotourism, and cultural preservation (includes visits to places of historical/cultural interests)
  • Indigenous knowledge, land tenure and gender roles as they apply to forest management
  • Management of natural forest ecosystems vs. intensive plantation forestry
  • Agroforestry, community forestry, forest practices, certification programs, and international trade.
