PrintWater and Watershed Restoration
Water is one of the most important natural resources associated with forests, especially in the western United States. More than half of the surface water in many western states, for example, originates from National Forests.

As the U.S. population continues to grow, the role of forests in supplying water will become even more important. At the same time, many forested watersheds have deteriorated in recent years due to damage caused by wildfires, insect and disease outbreaks, and poorly managed logging or recreational activities. Also, an important future concern for forest managers is the possible impact of global climate change on forests and their associated water resources. There will clearly be a need for foresters with additional training in watershed management and restoration well into the foreseeable future.

This focus area requires students to take courses in environmental hydrology and watershed restoration. Students are also required to take two additional elective courses from a restricted list of courses in areas such as hydrology, meteorology, or geomorphology.
